A reason Pokemon cards are valuable is because some cards can be really rare; they could be from an older set and not be made any more so those could be limited. Like the first edition holographic Charizard and the Iono (Special Illustration Rare) the Charizard is way more pricey than the lono which is newer.

Another factor can be if it’s graded, grading cards can be a high risk, high reward factor if it gets a bad grade you lost some money but if it’s a good grade you might have a good card you can sell (grading is when people examine the condition of your card). Like that first edition holographic Charizard if that was a psa 10 or a different good grading company grade that card is worth way more than when it’s not graded.

Sometimes it can be because of how old it is some people may want to rebuy a lot of Pokemon they had from their childhood like again, the Charizard, (it’s a really old card so it’s rare plus tying into limited there not making it anymore).

Lastly, Pokemon cards is a TCG game which stands for Trading Card Game. So it’s also a game, another thing that makes cards rare is their playability in the game. This isn’t always because some really good cards don’t even have to be holo or just a really common card.

But with something really good like Pokemon cards there are some downs like fakes, the reason fakes are around is because Pokemon are worth a lot of money so people can just print out something that looks like a real Pokemon card and sell it as a real Pokemon card.
