The reason we handout candy is because while the candy industry was on the hunt for a fall holiday, neighborhood parents were looking for an organized activity to keep youngsters out of trouble. And by the late 1940s, passing out treats was established as an alternative to tricks. Candy companies needed an excuse to market their product in the fall.
Halloween’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samantha, which was held on November 1 in contemporary calendars. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits. To appease the deities, they built bonfires and sacrificed crops and animals. Villagers also attended the bonfire ceremonies wearing animal heads and skins, which may be where the tradition of Halloween costumes first came from.
Overall that’s the reason we participate in Halloween and pass out candy .
