On Sunday afternoon, Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark passed Pete Maravich as the highest-scoring NCAA Division 1 player in both men’s and women’s college basketball. And she did it by a whopping eighteen points. She’s become a star, with the ticket prices for her games becoming the most expensive in women’s basketball history. The tickets for the game where she beat Maravich’s record? A grand total of $577. That’s about five times more than a pair of airpods.
Clark was born on January 2nd, 2002 in Des Moines, Iowa. She started playing basketball at the age of five, but could only play in recreational boys’ leagues because there weren’t any girl’s leagues available. Clark also played volleyball, soccer, tennis, softball, and golf. Middle school was when she first started being recruited- she received a letter of interest from Missouri State in seventh grade. In high school, she played soccer on the varsity team before deciding to solely focus on basketball.
She won numerous awards in high school, and was ranked as the fourth-best player in her class of graduation by ESPN. On November 12th, 2019, she announced her commitment to her hometown team of Iowa, over offers from Iowa State and Notre Dame. Ever since then, she’s been breaking record after record, etching her name into the history books. Recently, Clark declared her eligibility for the WNBA draft, instead of staying for another year at Iowa (players who entered in the 2020-2021 season were offered another year of eligibility due to Covid-19). She’ll leave behind a legacy of excellence, all while looking forward to the bright next chapter.
