Review of “No Brainer”

Warning: Spoilers included!

“No Brainer,” the 18th book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, came out on October 21st. However, despite being primarily popular among fans, I wouldn’t say I liked this book as much as the others in the series.

Even though the other books are somewhat hard to believe, they are still reasonable. Sure, it’s hard to think that at a sleepaway camp, they have stew from years ago, but it’s still enjoyable to read about. Meanwhile, this book was far-fetched. Kids (spoiler alert) do crazy things, such as break their lockers with pickaxes, while the school does things that cannot even be believed. For example, a teacher taught a fake language, they had a student do essential things as “principal of the day,” students can skip class, they allow advertisements in the school, and they censor all of the books that have any animals without clothes.

Additionally, the cover and back of the book could be more accurate. The title, “No Brainer,” has nothing to do with the plot and is only really at the beginning of the book. Also, the back of the book is about how he’ll miss his best friend when he goes to a different school. In reality, they only mention Rowley about once in the entire book.

The “plot” is not a plot, just a series of random events. It is told in a kind of non-linear way, jumping around from the past to the present.

Also, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Movie Diary says that “…the reader is supposed to believe the stories could have happened anywhere across the country or right down the street.” However, in this story, they give the school a name that isn’t even believable, making it harder to relate to the story.

Overall, the newest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book could be better than the others. It could have been more believable and had some aspects that made reading less enjoyable.

Note from the author: This is just my personal opinion. If you loved the book, good for you! Please don’t be offended; just because I don’t like the book doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.
