Shocking World Cup Results

The FIFA World Cup 2022 kicked off with some surprising results on November 20, 2022, in Doha, Qatar. The World Cup includes the 32 best countries in the world which are then split into groups of 4 and play all of the teams in their brackets. The top two teams advance to the round of 16. After that, teams get into the elimination games. In these games, a loss means automatic elimination. A tie is settled with two rounds of overtime and PK shootouts. Nov. 20 to Dec. 2 hosts the Group Stage but as of Nov. 29, many teams thought to be the top of their group face elimination.

Starting with Germany, the 4 time World Cup winners were looking for their fifth star this year but the former champions may have to wait. Placed in a bracket with Spain, Costa Rica, and Japan, they were predicted to be at the top with Spain. However, in their game versus Japan, following a PK in the 33rd minute by Manchester City player İlkay Gündoğan, Germany struggled to score again for the rest of the half and well into the second. They were caught off guard by a goal from Japan’s Ritsu Doan in the 75th minute which evened the score 1-1. Then, with only 7 minutes left, Takuma Asano scored for Japan and led the team to a 2-1 victory over the 11th-best team in the world. Germany’s loss and their recent tie with Spain have dropped them to the bottom of the bracket with a very slim chance of advancing.

Furthermore, Argentina is the 2nd best team in the world according to the FIFA ratings and they have PSG stars, Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria. Unfortunately, this powerhouse is not what it’s thought to be after its loss against Saudi Arabia. A PK in the 10th minute by Messi put Argentina in the lead but it didn’t last long because Saleh Alshehri scored at the beginning of the second half. Salem Aldawsari scored only 5 minutes later, putting Saudi Arabia in the lead, 2-1. Argentina was unable to score again and lost to a team ranked 51 in the world. Luckily, they won 2-0 against Mexico on the 26th of November which placed them second in their bracket. The only guarantee that they stay in the top 2 is if they win against Poland on Nov. 30 without any goals scored against them. If they fail to deliver, it will give Saudi Arabia the chance to take their place in the round of 16.

Last but not least, England struggled to score against the US on Nov. 25. The match remained scoreless until the very end. Though there were many opportunities to score, English fans were disappointed when England, the 6th best team in the world, only tied with a team placed in the 16th spot. Luckily, a prior win against Iran that ended 6-2 boosted England up to the first spot in their bracket. The US remains second in their bracket after their 1-0 win against Iran. With no further games to be played, the results stand with England and the US advancing and Iran and Wales gone.

The World Cup only comes every four years but it’s a time full of celebration. This year, many teams that haven’t normally qualified, are proving their worth against the star teams. These results just show that anything can happen and there is so much more to come in this World Cup!
