Holmgren was the 2nd overall pick for the Oklahoma City Thunder, being picked after Paolo Banchero. Holmgren had previously been playing for Gonzaga in college where they went down in the sweet 16 after being the 1 seed.

Other high draft picks that were also out for their first season were Blake Griffin, Joel Embid, and Ben Simmons who all later turned out to be all stars. Thunder general manager Sam Presti said “Certainly, we are disappointed for Chet, especially given the excitement he had about getting on the floor with his teammates this season,” At Gonzaga, he was averaging 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks. The Thunder have recently been in rebuild mode after losing their superstars Kevin Durant, Russel Westbrook, and James Harden. In the last 2 years, they only won 22 and 24 games.
