Derink Chauvin a minneapolis police was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. His murder trial began on March 8, 2021 and concluded on April 20 he was found guilty. This sparked a hope in people and that this is a start of something new George Floyd’s Brother Philonise said “He helped change the world. He made people realize that people’s lives matter all across the world, not just here in Minneapolis but in different countries.” and this is a strong message to be spread, people are finally realizing the change that needs to be made. People have said that this is just the start though we still have a long way to go. All of the charges add up to 75 years in jail but second degree murder takes at least 40 years behind bars but since he has no criminal history the Minnesota has sentencing guidelines so chauvin has to serve far less time so overall his time is TBD. It is also known that president Joe biden called George Floyd’s family after hearing the charges and congratulated them.
