Grammy’s Face Backlash from BTS Fans for Xenophobia

The famous American music awards ceremony, the Grammys, has just recently passed by on March 14th and some people aren’t too happy about the results. This year, widely known k-pop group, BTS, attended the Grammys for the second time as the first k-pop group to attend the Grammys.

Known for their large number of fans, BTS has won 361 show/awards and has had 535 nominations. They have about 25,400,000 followers on Spotify, their song Dynamite hit #1 on billboard’s hot 100 three times and all of their music videos have around 900M or 1B views on YouTube. It’s well-said that BTS is practically one of the biggest acts in the world right now. BTS, otherwise known as Bangtan Boys consists of seven members; Kim Namjoon as RM (stage name), Min Yoongi as Suga, Jung Hoseok as J-Hope, Kim Seokjin as Jin, Park Jimin as Jimin, Kim Teahyung as V, and Jeon Jungkook as Jungkook.

After performing their concert for the Grammys, BTS watched as the nomination results were being announced. For the Pop Duo/ Group performance, BTS was nominated for their song “Dynamite” for their first time alongside J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny and Tainy for “UN DIA (ONE DAY)”, Justin Bieber feat. Quavo for “Intentions”, Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande for “Rain On Me”, and Taylor Swift feat. Bon Iver for “exile”. Out of the five, “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande won.

This news angered Armys (BTS fans) due to the fact that Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga had much less performances of “Rain on Me” than “Dynamite” did. The two also aren’t a group and simply collaborated on a song together.  Out of all the nominated songs, “Dynamite” has gotten the most popularity and success so it didn’t seem right that it didn’t get chosen. Another dubious account was that BTS was not granted the ability to perform on the main Grammy stage but a smaller one that didn’t get televised.

There is also the fact that in past interviews, when asked what their main dream or goal as performers was, BTS always responded with winning a Grammy. Saddened by this, BTS fans claim that there isn’t much else that BTS can do to earn a Grammy because they’ve already achieved so many record-breaking albums, tours and #1’s throughout their career. Armys have come to the conclusion that the Grammys have been using BTS for their large hype to attract viewers but are choosing not to give them Grammys that “they deserve.” The reason for this could be and is now commonly thought to be because of Xenophobia or racism.

Despite the Grammys being suspicious of racism and their basically outraged fanbase, BTS stated that it was alright and that they’ll just have to try harder next time. Hopefully the Grammys will give BTS  the chance to win a Grammy in the future and allow them to be  content with their hard work successes.
