Chains is a historical fiction novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. I love chains because it has lots of drama and lots of very interesting parts. I have read Chains twice and both times I was so interested in it. I would give it a 10/10 rating. This book also is placed in the time of the war between England and the American colonies. It gives a lot of information to help you learn what might have happened during this time period.

Isabel, the main character is most likely in her teen years while her little sister is young. Isabel and Ruth are slaves and after their Master and Mother die, they are left to Mr. Roberts, Isabel and Ruth’s old Master’s nephew. He then sells Ruth and Isabel to get money and get rid of them even though they are supposed to be freed, which Miss Mary Finch stated in her will. They are sold to Madam and Master Lockton who don’t treat them the best. After Isabel has met her friend Curzon who is a rebel slave, she learns how harsh the Lockton’s are. Ruth is soon sold away from Isabel after she has a seizure and Isabel feels as if she is left with nothing. Isabel has too much anger with Madam and is soon punished after starting to threaten Madam. Isabel is branded with the letter I for “Insolence” which Isabel believes only stands for “Isabel”. After the British think they have won and lots of the rebel prisoners are held captive, Isabel decides to run away. She tricks the guard and takes Curzon. Together they cross the River Jordan to their freedom.

I recommend this book to all ages including adults. Maybe not young children because it could be a little hard for them to understand. This is an amazing book!
