How Many Hours Should a Middle School Kid be Using Electronics per Day?

Owen Williams, Writer

Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, kids have been on smartphones, video game consoles, laptops etc. a lot. But just how many hours per day are kids usually using screens? And how much should they be on electronics?

Electronics are a large part of our daily lives. The average adult sends 54 messages per day and receives 33. The average time between texts is 90 seconds. This means that the average adult spends over an hour texting per day! And they spend on average 2 hours 22 minutes on social media per day! But how much are kids on electronics? Teens spend an average of more than 7 hours per day looking at a screen! Health experts recommend that teens and kids spend a max of 2 hours per day on electronics and toddlers 30 minutes-1 hour. The average teen uses electronics over 3x more than they should. Most of this time is on either a gaming console, or a smartphone.

This amount of screen time is extremely bad for even an adult’s health and can lead to eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, and trouble sleeping.

Because of this, it is recommended that parents must limit their child’s screen time in any way possible.
