Movies to Watch Before WandaVision

Jacob Howe, Writer

WandaVision is the first Disney+ Show released by marvel studios, but what movies should fans watch to catch up and have a background for the new show? After taking the entirety of 2020 off, 2021 will deliver a plethora of MCU content as Marvel moves past the Infinity Saga. The beginning of phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now resting on the shoulders of WandaVision, and the series will once again welcome Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany aka Scarlet Witch and Vision as the main characters.

These past few months, Marvel Studios has done a very good job of keeping plot details for WandaVision a secret, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege has repeatedly stated that these Disney+ series will be a vital to the storyline. This new series will begin by taking Scarlet Witch and Vision into an altered reality of some kind that will copy famous sitcoms from the 1950s to the present day. Wanda and Vision will have a family and domestic life, but they’ll also encounter several other characters. There has also been confirmation of other Marvel characters such as Jimmy Woo, A secret agent of SHIELD, and Monica Rambeau, Daughter of Captain Marvel’s good friend.

There is great potential for WandaVision to shake up the MCU and the rest of Phase 4 too. It is already confirmed Scarlet Witch will return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and that WandaVision will set up the film’s events. There is even the possibility that Benedict Cumberbatch could cameo as Doctor Strange or that the show’s events will factor into other Phase 4 properties. The first season of WandaVision will also build off the 23 MCU movies that came before it. The show is set after Avengers: Endgame, but what other movies will significantly impact it? Here are the necessary MCU movies to watch ahead of its Disney+ debut.

  • Thor

While Thor is not the most necessary film to understand WandaVision, It will be helpful because of the comedic intern, Darcy Lewis who works to find Thor at the beginning of the movie. Even though she is not in any way a main character, her knowledge of the improbable  could be beneficial in WandaVision‘s story.

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron

The first MCU film that is directly responsible for setting up WandaVision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although Wanda was previously seen in Captain America: Winter Soldiers  post-credits, the second Avengers film gives viewers a better introduction. She’s featured alongside her brother Pietro aka Quicksilver. Avengers: Age of Ultron covers Wanda’s time as a freshly powered person following Hydra’s commands, her decision to side with Ultron in a war on the Avengers, and ultimately the heroic turn she makes by the end. This is where her traumatic MCU story starts to take shape as she loses her twin brother. But, Avengers: Age of Ultron also sets up major parts of her future. It includes a tease of the romance between her and Vision, and it also makes her an official member of the Avengers at the very end.

  • Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War in many ways, could be directly responsible for the events of WandaVision. While Vision and Wanda’s stories continued with them in a full-on relationship, they are put in great danger because of the Mind Stone sitting in Vision’s head. Despite trying to find an alternative solution, Thanos’ quest to collect all six Infinity Stones puts Wanda in the worst scenario possible. Scarlet Witch had to kill Vision by destroying the Mind Stone, but one heartbreaking goodbye wasn’t enough. Thanos reversed time to pluck the Mind Stone from Vision’s skull himself, forcing Wanda to watch him die again.
