Trend To Give Pets Fancier “People” Food

Nobody can deny the fact that the food these days is delicious. Although it may not be the healthiest, it seems as if it is getting better by the day. However, surprisingly, pet food is following closely behind. Here’s why.

According to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, approximately 85 million families in the United States own pets. That is about 67% of the population. Majority of those 85 million families would likely consider their pets as a family member. Due to that, they want to feed their animals the same healthy, delectable, high quality food that they would feed to an actual family member.

This connection between humans and pet food is old news. However, pet trends once followed human trends by approximately three to five years. Now, that gap keeps getting closer and closer. “In some cases, like digestive health, such as prebiotic and probiotic supplementation, the pet industry has actually led the human industry. Grain-free or gluten-free pet food caught on even faster than for human food.” says Pet Food Industry.

According to a 2020 study by Statista, 94.38 million Americans buy organic food only because it provides the fuel they need to be active and stay healthy. Pet owners want the same for their pets. They want their pets to be active and healthy too, so they feed them only organic food.

Additionally, it is natural for humans to feel special if they have a personalized diet specifically for their blood type, etc. Thus, people want their pets to feel special too, normally resulting in personalized diets for the animals. However, since people want their pets to feel special too, they don’t want to give them the cheap, healthy, disgusting looking pet food from PetSmart. So, it is natural to give them the same human food they eat.

Lastly, human food is scrumptious and pet food just isn’t. So when you’re eating your delicious dinner of steak and your dog just gives you those sad puppy dog eyes, you just have to give them some of your food. Once your pet tries the delicious human food, it’s hard to go back to the dull store-bought pet food and you just can’t resist those puppy dog eyes.
