- Bird nest soup, China
You wouldn’t necessarily think a bird’s nest is edible, but people use swifts nest for this soup. When you picture a bird’s nest, you envision a nest made out of twigs and leaves, but swiftlets make their nest out of saliva. This soup is quite expensive because the swiftlets build their nests over a period of 35 days, and the nests can only be collected 3 times a year. This soup is quite expensive and is considered a delicacy.
2. Fried tarantulas, Cambodia
You can buy these from street vendors in Skuon, Cambodia. They’re fried whole, legs, fangs, and all. They are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. For only a few cents, you can buy a tarantula as a tasty snack!
3. Stargazy pie, England
Stargazy pie is a Cornish dish made of baked pilchards, along with eggs and potatoes, covered with a pastry crust.
4. Escargots à la Bourguignonne
This dish consists of snails cooked in a sauce of white wine, garlic, butter and parsley, still served in their shells. They are said to have a similar consistency to mussels or clams.
5. Live octopus, Korea
Live octopus is cut into pieces, lightly seasoned with sesame oil, then served immediately, the tentacles still squirming on the plate. It is literally a battle with your food. This dish is known to be delicious and is served at seafood restaurants.
