All About Selena Quintanilla

Selena Quintanilla was a famous Hispanic singer who tragically was killed by a woman named Yolanda Saldívar on March 31, 1995. Selena was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, TX. Selena grew up with English as her first language. Her father was a musician, and Selena always had an interest in music, so her father started teaching her Spanish to get closer to the Latino culture. When Selena was about 10, Selena was the lead singer in a family band that would perform at weddings and clubs. 

Selena was considered the ¨Queen of Tejano,” which is considered a Mexican type of music that is incorporated into different styles and also called the ¨Mexican Modanna,” for her sexy outfits and dance moves. She was the first woman to incorporate Spanish and English into her music and was successful with it. She has been nominated for approximately 86 awards and won 67. She won 36 Tejano Music Awards, 14 Billboard Latin Music Award, 10 Lo Nuestro Awards, five BMI Awards, and one award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.

On April 2, 1992, Selena married Chris Perez. In 1990, the two started secretly dating, and he soon joined as the lead guitarist in the family band. They were married for only three years when Selena died. Chris Perez was 25 years old when Selena died. Chris was so depressed he took drugs and alcohol and said he hadn’t eaten for two days straight. 

On March 31, 1995, Selena was tragically shot and killed by her own manager, Yolanda Salívar in Corpus Christi, TX. Selena was only 23 years old. The two were meeting in a hotel room about the concerns that Yolanda was embezzling Selena’s money. Yolanda claims the shot was accidental but was still sentenced to life in prison. Yolanda is now 59 years old, and is eligible for parole on March 30, 2025, and is currently held at Mountain View Unit which is currently a maximum-security prison for women in Gatesville, TX.
