Cozy Hot Chocolate Recipes

Zora Hesselberth, Writer

The holidays are almost here, with the weather cooling off we need to stay warm. One way to do so, is to make some hot chocolate! Feel free to add your own touch to these recipes and when I say an ingredient is a garnish it is completely optional. Also, feel free you want to add your own garnishes!

Here are some recipes I have added one classic hot chocolate recipe and two recipes that have a little extra flavor.

Classic Hot chocolate: Makes 6 servings

¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

½ cup of sugar

¼ cup dark chocolate chips

4 ½ cup milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of cocoa powder (garnish)

Shredded chocolate (garnish)

In a medium pot heat milk over medium-low heat until steaming. Add sugar, cocoa, stir until cocoa is dissolved. Heat until the mixture is at the desired temperature. Add vanilla and stir to combine. Serve into mugs and add your own unique design with garnishes!

Peppermint Hot cocoa: Makes 1 large or 2 small mugs

I cup milk

¼ cup heavy cream

1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (depending on how sweet you want it)

Pinch of kosher salt

3 ounces finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate or chocolate chips

¼ teaspoon vanilla extract

⅛ teaspoon peppermint extract

Whipped cream, marshmallows, crushed candy canes (garnishes)

In a pot whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, peppermint extracts, and salt. Heat on the stove at medium-low until bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Add chocolate and whisk until thick and glossy, 1-2 minutes. Pour into a mug and add garnishes!

Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa: Makes 1 large mug

1 cup milk

4 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped

2 tbsp salted caramel sauce

Whipped cream (garnish)

In a saucepan add all ingredients except for whipped cream. Stir and bring the ingredients to a simmer. Take the saucepan off the heat, pour into a mug, add whipped cream and more caramel sauce, Enjoy!
